The Conference
The Ussher Society held its 45th Annual
Conference at the Hotel Rembrandt, Dorchester
Road, Weymouth, Dorset between the 3rd to the 6th of January
2007.
The four day event
covered earth and environmental sciences in the South West of
England and comprised field trips on Wednesday
3rd and Saturday
6th January and two days of presentations (talks
and posters). Local fossil collectors also
displayed their recent finds of scientific importance.
The main presentation
days were Thursday
4th and Friday
5th of January - many thanks
to those who contributed. The Scott Simpson lecture on Thursday
morning was given by Prof Richard Fortey, President
of the Geological Society of London and the joint half day session
with the SW Regional Group
of the Geological Society took place on the Friday afternoon,
based on the theme of ‘Geo-Tourism’.
The Field Excursions
The
field excursion on Wednesday 3rd was to Osmington
MIlls to examine the structure and stratigraphy of the area along
the Abbotsbury-Ridgeway Fault System and to examine the fine
coastal sections in the Oxfordian-Kimmeridgian rocks (led by
Prof. John Cope)
On
Saturday 6th, the excursion was to the Charmouth Heritage
Centre and to Lyme Regis to examine the
engineering works (led by Richard
Edmonds, Chris Pamplin and others).
Student Bursary
A bursary fund is available to cover or contribute to the cost of full-time students
wishing to attend the meeting to present a paper or a poster with the intention
of submitting a paper for inclusion in the Society’s journal.
