The
Conference
The Ussher Society
is pleased to announce its 46th Annual Conference at the Tregenna
Castle Hotel, St. Ives, Cornwall. This 3-day conference
for earth and environmental scientists working in south-west England
and related areas comprises two days of presentations, incorporating
a joint session with the South West Regional Group of the Geological
Society, and a field excursion.
The presentation days will be Thursday
3rd and Friday 4th of January – oral
and/or poster presentations are welcomed in all areas of geology,
geomorphology, engineering geology and environmental geology.
The
Scott Simpson Lecture will be presented by Dr Richard Scrivener,
of the British Geological Survey, on Thursday 3rd January,
and is entitled
“From Dines to the 21st Century:
Past activity, research and prospects for metal mining in SW
England”
A half-day joint session with the
South West Regional Group of the Geological Society will take place
on the afternoon of Friday
4th January, the session theme will be "Applied
Geology of South West England".

Field Excursions
Field excursion(s) will take place
on Saturday 5th January. Great company, scenery and
geology – a
perfect start to the New Year. Potential trips include:

Penlee Quarry - geology, extractive
industry and afteruse

of St Ives Bay

Land’s End Granite – geology
and mining landscape

Presentations
Papers in areas related to the
two themes outlined above are particularly welcome, but we also
look forward to receiving
papers covering a wide range of topics related to geoscience
in south-¬west
England. All presenting authors have the opportunity, and are
encouraged, to submit their paper for publication, subject
to peer review, in the Society’s journal, “Geoscience
in south-¬west England”.
If you wish to make a contribution
to the scientific programme, please send details of the paper/poster
to the Conference
Secretary by 31st October.
Expressions of interest should include: Title, Author(s) and
an Abstract of no more than 200 words. You
may choose
to download the abstract submission form, or include the same information
in your correspondence.

The Conference Venue is the Tregenna Castle Hotel. It occupies
a hill-top location on the southern side of St Ives, approximately
600 m from the railway station, and has panoramic views across

Student Bursary
A bursary fund is available to cover or contribute to the cost
of full-time students wishing to attend the meeting to present
a paper or a poster with the intention of submitting a paper
for inclusion in the Society’s journal. For details, please
