The Conference

The Ussher Society is pleased to announce its 47th Annual Conference at the Redcliffe Hotel, Paignton, Devon. This 4-day conference for earth and environmental scientists comprises field trips (to be held on Tuesday 6th and Friday 9th January) and two days of presentations, incorporating a joint session with the South West Regional Group of the Geological Society.

The main presentation days will be Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th of January - oral or poster contributions are welcomed in all areas of geology, geomorphology, engineering geology and environmental geology, related to the South West.

The Scott Simpson Lecture will be presented by Dr Jean-Bernard Edel (Louis Pasteur University, Strasbourg) on:

"Structure and geodynamics of the Variscan belt of western and central Europe in the light of geophysical data (gravimetric, magnetic, seismic and palaeomagnetic)."

In addition to the general papers and posters, there will be thematic sessions on the Variscan of Europe, Quaternary topics and tungsten mining, with special reference to the forthcoming re-opening of Hemerdon Mine.

Registration will commence, after the field excursion, at 18.00 on Tuesday 6th January, and there will an icebreaker reception from 18.30, kindly provided by IGI Ltd. A Committee Meeting will be held at 17.30 on Tuesday 6th and the 2009 AGM will take place after the conference proceedings on Wednesday 7th, to be followed by the Conference Dinner.

Field Excursions

Tuesday 6th January

A field trip has been organised for Tuesday 6th January, led by Dr Elaine Burt (BGS Cardiff) and Dr Kevin Page (University of Plymouth) to examine the Permian and Devonian rocks spectacularly exposed along the coast of Torbay.

Localities will include Hope’s Nose, Meadfoot Beach and Saltern Cove, Goodrington; there will be a lunch stop at an appropriate watering hole or please bring a packed lunch.

Booked participants should meet above Hope’s Nose on Ilsham Marine Drive (SX 945 638) at 09.30 on Tuesday 6th January.

Friday 9th January

Post-conference field trips have been planned for Friday 9th January and the alternatives are:

1. Visit to Hemerdon Mine, to be led by John Cowley and Richard Scrivener

2. Engineering Geology of the Rock Walk, Torquay, to be led by Jeremy Rickeard of Frederick Sherrell Ltd.

3. Visit to Kent’s Cavern, with a guided tour by the staff (please note that there will be a charge for this of £4.50 per person, to be collected on the day)

Please note that, for insurance and safety reasons, it is essential to book field excursions using the form attached. You will require a hard hat for the Torbay, Hemerdon and Rock Walk excursions and, additionally, a high visibility vest and safety boots for the Hemerdon and Rock Walk excursions.

Please bear in mind that you may have made a reservation for the Conference Dinner above, to be held on the evening of Wednesday 7th January.
