The Conference
The Ussher Society successfully
held its 47th Annual Conference at the Redcliffe Hotel, Paignton,
Devon. The
4-day
conference for earth and environmental scientists
comprised field trips (held on Tuesday 6th and Friday 9th
January) and two days of presentations, and also incorporated
a joint session with the South West Regional Group of the Geological
Society.
The main presentation days were
Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th of January - oral or poster contributions
were presented covering diverse subject areas.
The Scott Simpson Lecture was presented
by Dr Jean-Bernard Edel (Louis Pasteur University,
Strasbourg)
on:
"Structure and geodynamics
of the Variscan belt of western and central
Europe in the light of geophysical data (gravimetric, magnetic,
seismic
and palaeomagnetic)."
In
addition to the general papers and posters, there were thematic
sessions on the Variscan of Europe, Quaternary topics and tungsten
mining, with special reference to the forthcoming re-opening of
Hemerdon Mine.
An icebreaker
reception was kindly provided by IGI Ltd.

Field
Excursions
Tuesday 6th January
A field trip was organised for Tuesday 6th
January, led by Dr Elaine Burt (BGS Cardiff) and Dr Kevin Page
(University of Plymouth) to examine the Permian and Devonian
rocks spectacularly exposed along the coast of Torbay.
Localities included Hope’s Nose, Meadfoot
Beach and Saltern Cove, Goodrington.
Friday 9th January
Post-conference field trips were planned for
Friday 9th January and the alternatives are:
1. Visit to Hemerdon Mine, to be led by John
Cowley and Richard Scrivener
2. Engineering Geology of the Rock Walk, Torquay, to be led by
Jeremy Rickeard of Frederick Sherrell Ltd.
3. Visit
to Kent’s Cavern,
with a guided tour by the staff (please note that there will
be a charge for this of £4.50
per person, to becollected on the day)

negotiated the special rate of £40 per person
per night B&B (no single supplement) for Ussher Society
